Special Topics: Political Leadership This class introduces students to the study of leadership. We spend much time learning about leaders who, for good or bad purposes, manage to mobilize the support of large organizations, whole communities or entire societies toward a specific goal. We are interested in what type of people become leaders, what sorts of resources they possess, why people follow leaders, why bad leadership happens, and how leaders manage their power. |
C. de Clercy |
|
001 |
Special Topics: Comparing Women’s Political Leadership in the Provinces: Kathleen Wynne, Christy Clark and Rachel Notley This course compares provincial political structures through a feminist lens, especially with regard to the premier’s office and the party system. The course centers on two questions: why have female Canadian political leaders been successful recently in rising to lead some provincial governments in Canada; and once in office, how do they exercise leadership? |

Special Topics: What is Democracy and How do We Study It? This course is designed to introduce students to different approaches to political science analysis. This will be accomplished through a series of lectures taught by different professors, each tackling the same question: “What is democracy and how do we study it?” Each lecture will focus on a specific approach to the question, will consider the conceptualization and operationalization of the relevant ideas, and detail the method of analysis used to study democracy in that way. The benefit of this course is that students will be able to understand and compare the differences between approaches to political science and the conclusions that they produce. |

These are an important part of the course, and failure to participate due to a lack of access to computer facilities will not be considered grounds for appeal.
