Research Interests

Dr. Friesen is a political psychologist who studies obstacles to equality in political engagement and threats to full citizen participation in democracies. Using lab studies, survey experiments, and behavioural data, she investigates the intersection of social identities, emotions, contentious contexts, individual-level traits, and physiological responses to political content and interactions. More information about her publications, pre-prints, and open science content are located at www.amandafriesen.com

Dr. Friesen’s current projects include:

  • Social Signals: The Dynamics of Naturalistic In-person Political Conversations (funded by Canada Foundation for Innovation).
  • Stress and Politics: Improving Measurement and Devising Interventions to Mitigate Politically-induced Stress (funded by SSHRC Insight).
  • Levelling the Playing Field: Investigating the Role of Sport Participation on Political Engagement and Leadership.
  • The Appearance of Political Actors: A series of studies on how weight stigma, gender presentation, and attractiveness impact candidate evaluation and success.
  • Scandals and Success: Cataloguing Canadian Candidate Scandals and Responses and their Impact on Political Donations (Funded by SSHRC Insight Development Grant).
