Research Interests

Dr. Harmes specializes in the competition between conservative and progressive ideas, party factions, and political parties in Canada and the United States. This includes a focus on: the left-right competition over foreign, economic, and environmental policy; the influence of party ideological factions on leadership races and policy; and the use of modern political strategy and communications techniques by Canadian political parties.

Current Research Projects

This project examines the different ideological factions in Canadian and US political parties, their links to different conservative and progressive social movements, and how they attempt to influence party platforms, leadership contests, and candidate selection.

2. Party Outreach to Traditionally Non-Aligned Voters

This project examines why, when, and how Canadian political parties seek to court voter blocs that have traditionally not supported them.

3. The Politics of Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) Investing
