The Department of Political Science is saddened to share that Dr. Bohuslav “Bob” Bohumil Kymlicka, one of our early departmental stalwarts and an important builder of Western University, has passed away.
Dr. Kymlicka’s connection to Western began long before his distinguished academic career. He was himself a Western University student, a formative experience that shaped his lifelong commitment to scholarship, teaching, and the growth of the institution. As a young undergraduate, he developed the intellectual foundations that would later guide his work as a faculty member, mentor, and colleague. His journey - from Western student to Western professor - embodied the very best of what our university strives to cultivate: curiosity, integrity, and a dedication to public life.
Joining the department in its formative years, Dr. Kymlicka played a central role in building the foundations of Political Science at Western. His contributions helped shape the department’s academic identity, strengthen its programs, and support generations of students who benefited from his thoughtful guidance and unwavering commitment to teaching. His legacy continues through the many scholars he influenced, the colleagues he supported, and the institutional structures he helped establish.
